Ella M. Lawrence, age 95 of Marquette, died Friday evening at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee following a short illness.
She was born on March 13, 1909 in Ford River, a daughter of the late Henry A. and Margaret (Ettenhofer) Kasten.
Ella was a graduate of Escanaba High School and on July 9, 1938 she married Herbert W. Lawrence in St. Joseph’s catholic church in Escanaba.
After graduating from high school, Ella began working for Kresge’s in Escanaba where she met her husband. She then moved to Kingsford and the couple owned and operated Bert’s Groceries for over nine years. They moved to Marquette in 1958, where they owned and operated the Western Auto Store for twelve years.
Ella enjoyed working with her husband, gardening, various crafts and traveling. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two sons, John K. (Sherri) Lawrence of Marquette and Daniel J. (Mary) Lawrence of Groveland, MA; three sisters, Lorayn Thorin of Escanaba, Grace Roberto of Knoxville, TN and Minnie Jacobson of Mapleton, OR; four grandchildren, Cindy (Jamie) Albright, Mark, Jason, and Brendan (Jill) Lawrence; three great grandchildren, Zachary, Paul and Jacob. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband Herbert W. Lawrence on December 3, 1991; two brothers, Ralph and Clarence Kasten; three sisters, Rose Monson, Beatrice Kasmarek and Edna Dean.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Bishop’s Room of the Cathedral. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum in the Spring.
