Dona M. Pelto, 77, of 813 W. Fair Avenue, Marquette, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Sunday morning, May 30, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Pelto was born on June 13, 1932 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Alphonse and Signe (Hietala) Remillard. She attended John D. Pierce School through the 8th grade and graduated from Graveraet High School in 1949. She later graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Detroit and was employed as a lab technician there.
Upon returning to Marquette, Dona was employed by Northern Michigan University in the comptroller's office. She also attended NMU.
In 1953, Dona married Bern Pelto at St. Michael's Catholic Church. After her son Steve was born, she became a stay at home mother.
Dona was a member and officer of the Junior Woman's Club and enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She was a room mother at Whitman Elementary School for both her sons and was a Cub Scout leader as well.
Dona received her real estate license in 1971. She was a member of the National Association for Female Executives, was a member of the Michigan and National Association of Realtors, and the Upper Peninsula Association of Realtors. She worked for State Wide for many years before helping her son establish Look Realty in 1977 where she was the office manager until retiring from real estate in 2003.
She was an active member of St. Peter's Cathedral where she previously served on the parish council, the church's Social Justice Committee and also its altar society. She was also a former usher at the cathedral, belonged to the prayer line and helped out at funeral lunches. She was a former Zonta Club member. For approximately five years, she was a volunteer at Beacon House.
Dona's great joy was her two granddaughters who called her "Nama." She loved their Saturday night "dates" and later attending their functions at school, dance and piano recitals. Both granddaughters followed in her footsteps as high school cheerleaders.
Dona also enjoyed her Friday meetings with several friends for coffee or card playing and their birthday outings.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bern Pelto; two sons, Steve (Wendy) Pelto and Brian Pelto; two granddaughters, Courtney and Meredith Pelto all of Marquette; one sister, Terry (Bob) Davis of West Palm Beach, FL as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral with the Rev. Timothy Ekaitis officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home where a parish prayer service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Arlene Herlich, Rita Angeli, Joanne Tasson, Martha Rice, Jan Frazier, Jan Vickstrom and Sally Nelson.
Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider St. Peter Cathedral or Father Marquette Schools in Mrs. Pelto's memory.
