Raymond V. Fagerberg, 85, of Gwinn, died Saturday evening, June 19, 2010, at Marquette General Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 29, 1925, in Marquette, a son of the late Victor E. & Viola L. (Johnson) Fagerberg. Ray was raised in Carlshend and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a WWII veteran having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in the army from 1943 to 1946. On September 24, 1949 he married the former Ruth E. Webb in Marquette.

Ray worked for 11 years as a guard in the Marquette Branch Prison before being employed as a civilian carpenter at K.I. Sawyer AFB. Ray retired in 1987.

He was a member of Gwinn United Methodist Church, "oldest active" life member of Gwinn VFW Post 5670, and life member of the DAV. He served with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, was an aid to the Michigan VFW Commander, coached Little League baseball and Marquette Junior Hockey. Ray was a devoted Detroit Lions, Tigers and Redwings fan (especially the "Swede" players). Ray was also an avid deer hunter and bagged his last buck at the age of 83.

Ray is survived by his wife, Ruth Fagerberg of Gwinn; children, Kathy R. (Michael) Swartout of Albion, MI and Randall (Jan Anderson) Fagerberg of Munising; grandson, Daniel Swartout; nieces, Gloria Nichi of Ishpeming, Lynn Holm of Gwinn and Nancy (Brian) Filizetti of Gwinn; numerous great-nieces/nephews; and special pet, Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard and granddaughter, Kelly Rae.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home with Rev. Geri Hamlen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery.

The Gwinn VFW Post 5670 will provide military honors and serve as pallbearers.
