Viola G. "Vi" Dagenais, 100, of Marquette, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, July 25, 2010 at Marquette General Hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Dagenais was born on June 9, 1910 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Farley and Georgina (Dupras) Sims and was a lifelong area resident.
Vi and her late husband, Clifford, together owned and operated Dagenais' Grocery Store on Rock Street for many years. She was later employed as a clerk at a variety of stores until she retired at age 72.
In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, playing cards and loved going to the casino.
Vi was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marquette.
She celebrated her 100th birthday with a party on June 12th with over 400 relatives and friends in attendance. Vi greeted everyone by their name. She also laughed that her favorite priest, her doctor and even her funeral director came to the party.
She is the loving mother of four children, Elizabeth (Charles) L'Huillier, Clifford Ronald (Veronica) Dagenais, Carol (Gary) Schmeltzer and Marilyn Hult (Bob Trewhella), all of Marquette; she also leaves 18 grandchildren, over 40 great grandchildren, 6 great, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and very special friends, Sharon and Jim Petrella of Marquette. She also had many friends in Meadview, Arizona who were like family to Vi.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Clifford H. Dagenais on May 25, 1999; a son, Neil Dagenais on June 12, 2007; one sister, Isabel Retaskie and a brother, James Sims; also a great grandson, Alan Nyberg.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
